The village of Shardlow flourished following the opening of the Trent & Mersey Canal in 1770. Wharves and warehouses sprang up to support the busy trade enjoyed by this canal port. One such building has been preserved and is now the Heritage Centre as seen in this photograph.

Perfect reflections of Hardwick Hall in the Great Pond, Hardwick Country Park. Hardwick Hall is one of the most important Elizabethan country houses in England. It was designed for Bess of Hardwick in the late 16th century.

The borders of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire meet at Trent Lock. Located close to Long Eaton it is a major canal junction where the River Soar and the Erewash Canal meet.
