Famous for its association with the poet Lord Byron the abbey was originally founded in the late 12th century. It became the seat of the Byron family in 1540. The poet, Lord Byron, sold the property to a friend, Colonel Thomas Wildman, in 1818. The home remained in private hands until 1931 when ownership was passed to the Nottingham Corporation.
