The Errwood and Fernilee Reservoirs were completed in 1967 and provide drinking water for Stockport. Running through the Goyt Valley the River Goyt rises on the peaty expanses of Whestone Ridge about four miles south-west of Buxton then flows to join the Mersey near Stockport. The River's upper valley covers the ground between the desolate moors around the Cat and Fiddle Inn to the lively colourful Whaley Bridge. Although flooded to form the two reservoirs, the valley's southern area has retained its outstanding natural beauty and provides a tree-covered paradise for walkers.
