Shipley Park Shipley Country Park, some 600 acres, were once scarred by headstocks, spoil heaps and other signs of opencast mining. Nowadays it is a popular recreation area and a beautiful place for a walk whatever the season. Located on the edge of Heanor and Ilkeston, Shipley - from Scipelei meaning a clearing for sheep - was once renowned for its good shooting and for Shipley Pike - a special dish made from fish caught in the lake. Derbyshire County Council opened Shipley as a Country Park in 1976. |
